Holding a Family Drug Intervention, as all types of interference go, is never easy. It puts a lot of pressure on the family as they work their best to encourage and support their affected loved ones into sobriety. There will be times when some will begin to question if what they are doing is still worth it.

At this point, everyone must understand what is at stake. Everyone should know that their participation and support are key in aiding their loved one to overcome his addiction while also eliminating the potential for relapse.

How to Ensure a Successful Family Drug Intervention

Staging an intervention almost always results in heightened emotions that may trigger conflict between and among the affected loved one and his family. Therefore it is recommended for a successful Family and Drug Intervention one must take note of the following:

  • Take the time to plan it carefully.
  • Choose a date where the affected loved one is less likely to be under the influence.
  • Make sure that one has sufficient knowledge and understanding of the substance abuse issue.
  • Assign one point of contact that will assist in communicating with the rest of the family and ensuring everything stays on track.
  • Make sure that everyone is on the same page with the course of the treatment and recovery.
  • Decide how the flow of the actual intervention would be, so it does not go all over the place.
  • Be prepared to respond to the affected loved one calmly and rationally.
  • As difficult as it may seem, avoid expressing anger during the intervention. Instead, make the affected loved one feel that you are there to support their recovery.
  • Stay on track during the intervention.

Never allow the affected loved one to take time off to “think things through.” Instead, be persistent and prepared to get them evaluated as soon as they agree to undergo treatment. Let them feel that you are there for them. You are on this together.
