Before you enter into any detoxing from alcohol and drugs, it is important to know the goal of any detox program is to allow the body to heal after a long term drug addiction. Detoxification from drugs and alcohol can be a particularly dangerous process, during which medical supervision is necessary to ensure the patient’s safe withdrawal.

Private Detoxification at Home

You can do it at home, but private detoxification is not for everyone. There are several reasons it may not be the best choice for everyone:

  • It may not be safe for everyone
  • It doesn’t always work if the program given was not followed
  • Professional detox, in many cases, is safer, more comfortable and effective

The best choice is to talk to a medical and mental health professional about your plans and options to be guided accordingly.

General Stages

Early Stages – The time frame of the early stages is from 1 hour to two days after usage stops. Symptoms severity can range from mild to worst, however, within a day or two, they usually reach peak levels. At this point, medication is not generally required.

Peak Stages – The time frame starts within eighteen hours to five days after usage stops. Detoxing from alcohol and drugs in the first few days are generally the worst. All or most the drugs have left the patient’s body, leaving it unable to function properly. The body is struggling to cope with the loss of the drugs.

Weakening Stages – As the body slowly become accustomed to the lack of drugs, the weakening stages start from three days to a week after usage stops. Relapse is somewhat less common during this stage because the patient has already been through the worst.

Final Stages – For most patients detoxing from alcohol and drugs will end between five to fourteen days after usage stops. Symptoms have lessened at this point where they are not capable of taking care of themselves but with the help of therapy and group supports.
